Printer Primer: HP LaserJet Pro 400 MFP M425dn

Announced earlier this year along with several other printers, the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M425 is a capable, monochrome 4-in-1 laser with the ability to print, scan, copy, and fax. At 17.32 x 15.07 x 16.67″ and weighing 43 lbs, it’s about as compact as a laser can get while still providing its various functions.

This unit is capable of very snappy printing with speeds of up to 35 ppm and a first page out time as fast as 8 seconds at a max resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. The M425 features a 3.5″ touchscreen CGD control panel which provides access to device menus and modes as well as printer apps.

The standard Ethernet connectivity with the printer makes it easy to print over a local network, and the ePrint and AirPrint functionality extends the capabilities even farther. HP’s ePrint technology allows you to simply email documents to the printer from any device to this printer with its own unique email address. AirPrint works with both Android and iOS devices and allows documents and photos to be sent back and forth.

Paper handling is definitely one of the strengths of this LaserJet. Users can automatically print, scan, or copy either single or double-sided input, saving valuable money on paper. Additionally, the M425 comes with a 50-sheet ADF which makes unattended scanning, faxing, and copying easy and intuitive. You won’t have to refill the input tray often with a main paper tray which can hold up to 1,250 sheets plus an additional 50-sheet multipurpose tray.

The LaserJet Pro 400 M425 uses toner cartridges that match its robust paper capacity. The standard toner cartridge, an HP 80A, has a yield of approximately 2,700 pages. The high-yield HP 80X is rated for 6,900 pages, and is less than $80 more, delivering an outstanding cost per page under 3 cents.
